Position Opening: Organizer Summary: The Maine State Employees Association, SEIU Local 1989, seeks an external organizer to expand a strategic and aggressive organizing effort in Maine. Description: The Maine State Employees Association, SEIU Local 1989, represents over 15,000 workers across Maine. We are committed to fundamentally changing the conditions for workers throughout Maine by organizing early childhood education, home care, social service workers, healthcare workers and public sector workers statewide. The organizer has primary responsibility for conducting new organizing campaigns under supervision and eventually gaining the capacity to run large campaigns independently. A significant portion of the day-to-day duties include using house visits and one-on-one meetings to identify and recruit workplace leaders for organizing campaigns; leading committee meetings; working with volunteer members; performing corporate research and quickly learning sometimes complex regulations; and working to mobilize workers for legislative campaigns and building relationships with workers in order to build the union.
