Job Description: Campus-Wide Database Administrator
Organization:
Located on a 47-acre
campus in Silver Spring, Maryland, the National Labor College (formerly
known as the George Meany Center for Labor Studies) provides a rigorous,
high-quality undergraduate experience for adult learners and continuing
education programs for union members and leaders. The College is accredited
by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In addition to
its educational programs, the college offers unions superior conference
facilities for their own education programs and conferences. Both of
these functions, education and hospitality, are critical to the college's
mission and well-being.
Overview of Responsibilities
The NLC's two mission-critical
databases are the Visual One Property Management System and the SunGard
Higher Education Student Information System Power Campus. Both databases
are Microsoft SQL databases running on Windows 2000/2003 Server. The
college's accounting system, Great Plains, is also SQL-based, requiring
modest support of a similar nature. NLC's database administrator is
a new position, created to managed, administer, troubleshoot and perform
maintenance tasks for these systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors database
activities
- Tunes databases
for optimum performance, availability and data integrity
- Provides database
security and authorization
- Works with system
and network personnel to improve overall performance
- Provides Microsoft
SQL database installation, configuration, tuning and support
- Develops and
implements security plans and backup/recovery plans
- Performs user
account management activities
- Trouble shoots
data and application-oriented problems
- Assists with
end-user training
- Applies relevant
database patches and upgrades to support database applications.
- Creates and modifies
custom reports for users
- Creates and modifies
web-based queries to databases
- Serves as primary
interface with vendors on system problems and issues
- Runs SQL scripts,
exports query results to files, transfers and processes data for various
departments, creates and runs Crystal Reports.
- Other duties
as assigned
Stakeholders:
The staff and administrators
in Academic Services and other areas affected by these databases are
critical stakeholders to the work. The successful candidate will be
expected to facilitate active stakeholder involvement and input to their
environments.
Supervision:
This position reports
to the Deputy Executive Vice President.
Qualifications
and Skills:
- Bachelor's Degree
required
- Strong experience
with Microsoft SQL 2000/2005
- Strong experience
with Microsoft Windows 2003 Server
- Understanding
of relational database administration, programming languages, database
and process design tools, transaction processing systems, messaging,
- Database maintenance
& security
- Working understanding
of networking concepts and applications.
- Microsoft .Net
experience
- In depth knowledge
of SQL databases, including experience in installing, configuring,
upgrading and maintaining SQL Server databases in development, staging
and production environments, SQL Server availability monitoring
- Strong knowledge
of MS SQL Server SSIS and DTS
- Strong knowledge
of FTP and network protocols.
- Performance tuning
- Ability to work
individually with little supervision.
- Strong problem
solving, organizational and communication skills.
Desirable:
- Experience in
any of the college's key applications (Sungard PowerCampus, Visual
One, Great Plains)
- Some programming
experience including C++
- Higher education
experience
Salary range is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This
position is represented by the Newspaper Guild Local 35 of The Communications
Workers of America, AFL-CIO.
