VICE PRESIDENT FOR BUSINESS AFFAIRS AND FINANCE National Labor College The National Labor College invites applications for the position of Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance. The National Labor College (NLC), an accredited college affiliated with the AFL-CIO, offers bachelor degree programs focused on upper-level completion as well as union skills courses. The labor movement places a high value on education; the central mission of the NLC is to provide working people with a means to realize their educational aspirations through a program that emphasizes both academic excellence and the realities of career and family. Reporting to the President, the new Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance will be the Chief Financial Officer of an institution poised to advance in a number of important directions, all of which will require strong leadership and a strengthened financial foundation. Areas of focus in the future include expanding the extent of online programs in partnership with a for-profit entity, developing the physical property of the College to obtain significantly greater financial return, aggressively pursuing new revenue sources, and managing the existing obligations of the school in a responsible and prudent manner to permit future growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing budgeting and accounting activities, and providing overall leadership and vision in managing the fiscal affairs of the College. The person who obtains this position will also be significantly involved in developing and carrying out the strategic planning and assessment activities of the institution and should be comfortable working for a labor education and training center. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience in complex political environments and who can clearly communicate finance and budget matters to varied constituencies. The successful candidate should possess an advanced degree and at least five years of progressive responsibility as a financial and administrative leader, preferably in higher education. Finally, the successful candidate should have demonstrated management skills and the ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with managers and staff throughout our organization. The National Labor College is located on a beautiful 46-acre campus in suburban Silver Spring, Maryland, about 25 minutes from downtown Washington, DC. The NLC is the only institution of higher learning that focuses exclusively on the higher education needs of labor union leaders and members. Founded in 1969 and formally opened in 1974, the George Meany Center for Labor Studies was established by the AFL-CIO to promote education and training opportunities for union leadership and members. Following accreditation in 2004 by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the name of the institution was changed to the National Labor College, reflecting its evolution from a training center to an accredited degree-granting college. The NLC has an annual operating budget of approximately $20 million with 17 full-time faculty and approximately 120 staff members, half of whom are employed through a unionized contractor to operate the NLC’s extensive conference and hospitality services functions. The NLC recently completed an ambitious, $40 million campus expansion and renovation program, which included the construction of the state-of-the-art Lane Kirkland Center, a 70,000 square foot facility that features new classrooms, a distance learning center, a dining hall, and administrative offices. Applications, accompanied by a letter of interest, current résumé, and the names and contact information of three references, should be submitted to:
