The Committee of
Interns and Residents/SEIU, the largest doctors' union in the U.S. represents
12,500 resident physicians in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Washington
DC, Florida, Puerto Rico, New Mexico and California. In addition to
traditional union concerns, CIR/SEIU has a strong history of patient
advocacy.
We are looking for
an Area Director to oversee the Massachusetts Region. This position
reports to the Director of Field Services.
The Massachusetts
Region currently represents 750 resident physicians working at two teaching
hospitals, Boston Medical Center and Cambridge Hospital. CIR/SEIU is
an organizing union that seeks to grow its membership in Massachusetts
and nationally.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct the day-to-day
administration of the Region's operations, including contract negotiation
and enforcement, and management of two Patient Care Funds.
- Develop and implement
the union's legislative, electoral, and health care policy programs
in Massachusetts.
- Develop and maintain
alliances with other unions, health care organizations, and local
and state officials.
- Hire and supervise
organizing, political and clerical staff, as appropriate.
- Work closely
with the national union management team and the Massachusetts Region
vice-president on national policy formation, local issue prioritization
and the integration of national policy with local issues.
- Work closely
with CIR/SEIU's national organizing director on development of organizing
objectives in Massachusetts, and when appropriate, supervise organizers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Significant experience
in management and supervision of labor union operations and staff.
- At least five
years' experience negotiating and enforcing collective bargaining
agreements, and representing union members.
- Four year college
or university degree.
- Significant experience
in political organizing and public policy analysis.
- Excellent written,
interpersonal, organizational, project management and communication
skills.
- Strong planning
and time management skills, and ability to prioritize and execute
multiple responsibilities.
- Willingness to
work variable and long hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Automobile, valid
driver's license, good driving record, and car insurance.

Salary commensurate
