DIRECTOR
OF COMMUNICATIONS
International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, AFL-CIO ("Local
150") is a labor organization representing employees principally
in Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa. With over 22,000 members, Local 150
is one of the largest operating engineer locals in the United States.
Originally chartered as a construction union, Local 150 now represents
working people in a variety of industries: construction, construction
materials production, steel mill services/slag processing, landscaping,
and public works, among others.
The
Director of Communications will direct all communications efforts of
the union, including public relations, press contacts and development
of promotional and educational materials to support the union's collective
bargaining and organizing initiatives. The Director must nurture and
maintain proactive and extensive contact with both trade press and traditional
news organizations. He/she will report directly to, and work closely
with, the President-Business Manager to ensure that Local 150's message
is consistent with the union's policy objectives. The Director must
be a strategic thinker, who will coordinate internal print communications
to union membership, such as the union's website, monthly electronic
newsletter and quarterly magazine.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree
in relevant field, graduate degree preferred.
- Must be a self-starter
with excellent communication skills, attention to detail in a multi-faceted
and changing environment and ability to work with union membership
and staff within the union.
- Must have experience
in strategic public relations, and successfully and proactively working
with the press.
- Experience in
public relations, communications and understanding of the construction
industry required.
- Must be able
to demonstrate strong leadership for direct reports, and build consensus
among various interest groups.
Based
in Countryside, Illinois (just outside of Chicago). Some travel required.
Salary
based on experience.
