AFSCME COUNCIL 31
The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
Council 31 is currently seeking candidates for the position of Community
Outreach Coordinator.
Council 31 is a
statewide labor organization representing some 78,000 workers in over
250 affiliated local unions. AFSCME members work in a wide range of
occupations--including health care, criminal justice, clerical, public
works, human services, and educational support. Council 31 has a strong
tradition of democratic, progressive trade unionism and has one of the
most effective organizing programs in the labor movement.
The Community Outreach
Coordinator will be responsible for helping to build a network of committed
supporters in the broader community, especially the religious community,
who will actively support the efforts of workers who are seeking to
organize a union in their workplace.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute
outreach plans to engage community and religious leaders;
- Meet one-on-one
with community and religious leaders at their homes, places of worship
or offices;
- Develop a network
of leaders who support workers' efforts to form a union;
- Develop support
materials (such as flyers, statements and literature);
- Guide workers'
effort to inform the religious community about their efforts to build
the union;
- Assist in planning
and execution of direct action designed to demonstrate broad community
support for workers' rights.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of
religious communities and networks in Illinois;
- Experience in
labor movement organizing, community organizing or working within
the religious community;
- Excellent interpersonal
skills;
- Strong written
and oral communication skills;
- Ability to work
on fast-paced campaigns;
- Ability to work
independently or as part of a team.
