ORGANIZER AND LEAD ORGANIZER

 

AFSCME Council 31 is one of Illinois' largest and most active unions, representing over 90,000 active and retired public service workers in over 275 affiliated local unions. Council 31 is a dynamic and progressive union which plays a key role in the Illinois labor movement, as well as in the state's political and legislative arenas. It has pioneered new strategies for organizing the unorganized, winning tough contract fights, and developing innovative programs to improve workers' lives.

Council 31 is currently seeking candidates for the positions of Organizer and Lead Organizer.

ORGANIZER

Responsibilities:
-- Assist in developing and implementing organizing strategy and campaign plans;
-- Identify, recruit, and develop workers to participate in organizing process;
-- Prepare outreach literature;
-- Develop working relationships with community and political allies.

Requirements:
-- Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
-- College degree; or experience as local union activist; or experience in community or grassroots organizing
-- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
-- Demonstrated ability to motivate others;
-- Ability to solve problems creatively;
-- Willingness to work long hours.


LEAD ORGANIZER

Responsibilities:
-- Supervise, train and direct work of other organizers in major campaigns;
-- Develop and implement organizing strategy and campaign plans;
-- Establish representative organizing committees and direct their activity and development;
-- Research and develop potential organizing targets.

Job Requirements:
-- Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
-- Extensive union organizing experience;
-- Proven ability to guide successful organizing campaigns;
-- Experience with staff supervision, development and training;
-- Knowledge of labor laws;
-- Strong written and verbal communication skills
-- Ability to work well on a team, as well as take individual initiative
