The Indian Employees Federation invites qualified candidates to apply for the following position:

POSITION: Director of Organizing
SALARY: $50,000 annually

The Indian Employees Federation is a Local of the American Federation of Teachers and represents approximately 9,000 federal sector workers in 24 states. This new position will work under the direction of the IEF Administrator. We provide excellent employee benefits.

DUTIES
The Director of Organizing will be responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive organizing strategy for the country with IEF release time employees and paid staff. The Director of Organizing must be able to supervise organizers, budget for campaigns, report to the IEF Administrator and AFT leadership regarding the status of the campaign and coordinate activities with the AFT, with the goal of increasing membership density and developing a functioning leadership structure. Specific duties include:

  • Planning, implementing and evaluating major external and internal organizing campaigns.
  • Supervising, in a professional manner, staffers who work under a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Communicating effectively to members, non-members, elected leaders and other employee groups.
  • Operating within the budgetary constraints of both the TFT and the AFT.

The position is Albuquerque-based and will require considerable travel around the country.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Background and experience in union building, demonstrating creativity and an ability to succeed in challenging environments through organizing campaigns that combine political mobilization, cultivation of community support and employee organizing.
  • Working knowledge of the AFT Organizing Model a plus.
  • Working knowledge of federal sector employee issues and use of such issues for organizing a plus.
  • Proven ability to make persuasive written and oral presentations.
