ZONE 1 COORDINATOR

Vacancy Announcement

POSITION:     Florida AFL-CIO Zone Coordinator

SALARY &      $32K-$40K, commensurate with experience.
BENEFITS:     Health plan, retirement plan and vacation/sick leave provided.

START DATE:  January 4, 2010

In the spring of 2006, unions in Florida agreed on a set of bold and strategic changes to the state’s labor movement known as the Florida Alliance.  To accomplish our goals, 4 Zone Coordinator positions have been established to assist the Florida AFL-CIO and Central Labor Councils in their endeavors. 

Zone 1 encompasses North Florida CLC (Jacksonville), North Central Florida CLC (Gainesville) and Northwest Florida Federation of Labor (Pensacola) of the state of Florida. It includes Chapters in Tallahassee and Panama City.  Zone 1 represents over 84,600 union members and union retirees.

We are dedicated to helping unions build capacity through legislative/political action, mobilization, and support for organizing.  Presently, the Florida AFL-CIO and the Central Labor Councils are seeking a bright, energetic and committed individual who wants to be part of this effort.

General Responsibilities:

  • Implement the Florida Alliance Plan as it pertains to the Zone area, at the direction of the Governance Board Chair;
  • Communicate effectively with CLC and State Federation leaders regarding all aspects of the Alliance Plan and the Zone Strategic Plan;
  • Work collaboratively with CLC Presidents and local affiliate leaders on organizing, mobilization, and legislative/political action projects;
  • Work collaboratively with local unions to develop an informed, effective, and energized union volunteer force.

General Requirements:

  • The zone coordinator is required to live in and work throughout the zone jurisdiction, operating from a base of one or more offices;
  • **Union experience, community organizing, political, issue and legislative campaigns, or other related fields;
  • **Ability to establish working relationships with union leaders;
  • **Ability to organize and multitask various projects and campaigns;
  • **Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • **Comfortable working in diverse environments;
  • **Self-motivated and willing to adapt to changing circumstances; 
  • **Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Power Point; and Data Bases;
  • Long hours and weekend work are to be expected;
  • Must have reliable transportation;
