Background: As one of the largest private sector labor unions in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) represents more than 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada. Its members are employed principally in retail food stores; food processing, packing and manufacturing plants; department and drugs stores; and distillery and chemical industries.

Job Description: Seeking law clerk to provide research and written support to in-house attorneys on a wide variety of issues and cases, including labor, employment and related court and administrative cases. Our legal department endeavors to involve law clerks as much as possible in discussions with attorneys and union representatives so that they have an understanding of how their work fits into a particular case, or in the development of overall strategies for organizing and representing workers. Law clerks will be permitted to use most papers they draft for writing samples.

Requirements: Strong analytical abilities and effective oral and written communication skills. Commitment or interest in labor or employment law, or the labor movement, economic change, and social justice is preferred. Current enrollment in second or third year of law school.

Compensation and hours: $20.00 per hour; approximately 15 - 25 hours per week as agreed upon. Schedule is flexible.

Duration: Summer 2008 and/or semester or school year from Fall 2008 to Spring 2009, if mutually agreeable.
