POLITICAL ANALYST

SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (SEIU) the nation's fastest growing labor organization representing more than 2 million workers, is seeking a Political Analyst in its Washington, DC office.

This position is responsible for monitoring and analyzing national, state, and local political activity ensuring that SEIU’s political objectives are implemented.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts extensive research and prepares detailed political research reports and other documentation (graphs, charts, maps) for use by the Governmental Affairs departments.    
  • Researches and provides ongoing surveillance and interpretation of the political landscape in order to advance within and outside the union’s political agenda and objectives.
  • Provide guidance and advise to SEIU locals, state councils and International staff that enhances the union’s political contact lists and voter registration.
  • Provides analysis of SEIU membership density by political subdivision and prepares detailed reports on the opportunities to use that density to create political change.
  • Provides analysis targeting SEIU membership by industry and district at the local, state and federal levels.
  • Monitors and provides detailed analysis on primary and general elections and state legislative races. 
  • Provides analysis and synopsis of various polling data and reports.
  • Monitors and provides analysis of elected officials and/or candidate industry relationships.
  • Represents SEIU in internal and external forums and maintains relations with SEIU locals and state councils.
  • Administers SEIU’s campaign data, organizing databases and other technologies employed during SEIU’s political efforts.
  • Works closely with the Political Department’s management team to develop and target SEIU member and independent expenditure contact programs.
  • Implements training of International, State Council, and Local Union staff in the use of campaign data and organizing technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the Field Information Services Department.

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelors degree in political / social sciences or liberal arts and at least five (5) years of political campaign or issue based campaign experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of political processes at the federal and municipal levels of government.
  • Thorough knowledge of polling and political tracking strategies and processes.
  • Knowledge of FEC and political finance laws and issues.
  • Knowledge of labor organizing methods.
  • Knowledge of on-line databases (Lexis/Nexis, Internet, federal database sources).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement in politically sensitive situations.
  • Ability to handle multiple sensitive assignments in a timely manner.
  • Ability to analyze data and make sound, logical conclusions.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, Quattro, and other spreadsheet software.
  • Skill in the use of geographic and mapping software.
