IMMIGRATION PROJECT DIRECTOR

The Immigration
Project Director is responsible for coordinating SEIU's work on immigration
policy and immigrant work rights issues with the work of the International
Executive Officers, Divisions, the Political, Community Strength, Communications
and Government Affairs Departments and SEIU Local Unions and State Councils.
The Director will coordinate work internally with departments responsible
for legislation, strategic campaigns, legal issues and communications;
with SEIU locals on work in their respective communities and in conjunction
with the international's programs; and externally with immigration coalitions,
advocacy groups and community organizations.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Direct SEIU's
work on immigration policy and immigrant worker rights including developing
annual goals, plans, budgets, and benchmarks for evaluation
- Convene and
coordinate SEIU staff assigned to this program working on legislation,
strategic campaigns, communications, and legal issues
- Integrate and
coordinate work on this issue through the divisions to broaden and
deepen a constituency throughout the union
- Coordinate, support
and expand the work of locals involved in all aspects of immigration
work in order to educate, organize and mobilize members
- Coordinate with
Change to Win and its affiliates to support strategies for organizing
in industries with large immigrant populations
- Build and develop
functioning and lasting coalitions with supporters and allies
- Coordinate community
and political outreach and mobilization
- Build community,
political, religious support for campaign
Qualifications:
Candidates should
have the following:
- Proven track
record at leading, planning and implementing strategic social justice
advocacy campaigns at national and local level
- Established relationships
and working understanding of immigrant rights, labor, and social justice
organizations and networks
- Ability to communicate
effectively in one-on-one and group settings, both verbally and in
writing; proven presentation skills
- Ability to analyze
key and timely community issues and sensitive political situations.
- Ability to work
independently to plan and carry out goals and timetables
- Ability to demonstrate
high level of proven leadership and judgment
- Verbal and written
Spanish fluency preferred
