JOB DESCRIPTION FOR ORGANIZING DIRECTOR
The Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO (APALA), is a national organization of Asian Pacific American unionists, workers, and community members committed to organizing, civil rights, and economic justice. APALA is currently hiring a National Organizing Director to work with APALA Officers, Chapters and Staff to advance a national organizing agenda for Asian Pacific American workers.
Job Title: Organizing Director
Location: Washington, D.C.
Reports to: Executive Director
Duties:
The duties and responsibilities of the Organizing Director include the following:
1. To provide APALA Chapters with technical assistance in such areas as member recruitment, organizational development, chapter visibility, and implementation of organizing programs on site.
2. To work with the APALA Officers, National Office, and APALA chapters to implement programs including: assisting chapters in building community coalitions to support local organizing campaigns, providing basic organizing training, such as house visiting or union basics, to enable APALA and community members to assist on campaigns, coordinate APA media outreach to support the organizing campaigns.
3. To assist the Organizing Institute in recruiting workers, students, and community activists for joint APALA - Organizing Institute trainings and to assist in coordinating the trainings. To assist the Organizing Institute in finding placements for graduates of OI programs.
4. To mentor and support Asian and Pacific American organizers and to help in tracking the placement and development of APA organizers. Maintain the national database of APA organizers.
5. To provide advice and strategy on available resources (including organizers) for unions targeting Asian Pacific American workers. Develop general organizing literature that can be translated to various languages and serve as a resource to unions organizing APA workers.
6. To assist unions in locating and evaluating organizing targets with large numbers of Asian Pacific American workers.
7. To coordinate and work with the AFL-CIO in all its activities.
8. To work with the Executive Director in implementing programs and administrative projects.
Qualifications:
Salary: Salary is competitive.
