COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST,
VOICE @ WORK
Voice@Work Communications Specialist
Through the Voice@ Work campaign, the AFL-CIO collaborates with national and local unions and community partners in reclaiming workers' freedom to form unions.
The Voice@ Work Communications Specialist is responsible for building and implementing external and internal communications systems to further this goal.
The Voice@ Work Communications Specialist works under the supervision of the Director of Media Outreach and is accountable to the Director of the Voice@ Work campaign as part of the Voice@ Work team.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Technical Skills
- Assist with development and implementation of external strategies to let the public and public opinion leaders know how collective bargaining lifts communities, what happens to workers when they try to form unions, and how the community can help; assist in strategic plan development.
- Assist in development and implementation of internal strategies to assist affiliates unions' efforts to communicate with the community allies and union members around organizing campaigns.
- Help build and implement a national media strategy for the Voice@ Work Campaign, including working with state and local central bodies to do editorial board meetings, events, and other media outreach.
- Write news releases, background pieces, advisories, fact sheets, talking points, op-eds and other media-related information.
- Write flyers, campaign materials, e-newsletters and backgrounders for internal communication purposes and develop materials specifically designed for community outreach, member outreach and education.
- Research, write and post content for online private community and public website.
- Assist in effort to build a thriving e-mail network of activists.
- Build a bank of worker spokespeople who can deliver the Voice@ Work.
- Help workers to refine their message and to speak out on their freedom to form unions and the importance of union membership in their lives.
- Coordinate with various AFL-CIO departments on developing and delivering message.
- Assist in the development and implement training with staff and affiliate unions on Voice@ Work message.
- Represent locally the national AFL-CIO, its officers and staff at all times with state and local labor councils, AFL-CIO affiliates, constituency groups, coalition partners and other support organizations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- B.A. or B.S. preferred in communications or related field.
- Minimum three years working in the union movement closely related social justice movement-some familiarity with labor movement required.
- Minimum two years experience in communications-related field such as media, publications, journalism, web work or member communications.
Skills
- Must have demonstrated excellent people skills and ability to relate to and communicate effectively with union leadership, rank-and-file union members, constituency groups and coalition partners to implement key AFL-CIO priorities.
- Union organizing experience a strong plus.
- Demonstrated writing skills
- Computer proficiency required.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, multi-player situation and to juggle multiple, competing deadlines.
- Travel required on a regular basis as needed, and for extended periods of time.

Duration
Expected duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension not to exceed 3 years.
Compensation: Wages and benefits are in accordance with collective bargaining agreement.
