SENIOR PROGRAM OFFICER

Department of Organizing and Services

The American Association of University Professors’ (AAUP) Department of Organizing and Services is pleased to announce a one-year temporary professional position in organizing, a position which will be filled as soon as possible.  In response to the increasing number of faculty organizing campaigns around the country, including organizing for collective bargaining, we seek to supplement AAUP staff and member-activists who are participating in these campaigns.  This work is integral to AAUP’s central mission of defending and advancing academic freedom, shared governance, and due process and peer review rights of faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Advancing the Association’s collective bargaining program by conducting organizing drives, and by advising and assisting local union leaders on such activities as contract negotiations, grievance processing and arbitration. Extensive travel required.

2. Fostering organizational development and membership growth in concert with chapter and state conference leaders.

3. Staffing of Association committees and other bodies addressing a broad range of issues relevant to American higher education.

4. Representing the Association before other faculty organizations, college and university bodies, and other organizations.

5. Coordinating with Association leaders and staff on particular projects and long-range planning.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience and demonstrated skill in organizing (collective bargaining, political action, grassroots initiatives, etc.), membership development, and/or experience with higher education collective bargaining or faculty governance.

2. Knowledge of labor relations and professional issues relating to higher education.

3. Experience and demonstrated ability to work with professional groups and individuals.

4. Superior written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency.

5. Advanced degree; experience teaching in higher education also desirable.

Compensation

Salary range of $50 – $55,000, commensurate with experience.

This is a one-year appointment for a position requiring a willingness and ability to travel extensively.
