SENIOR RESEARCHER/CAMPAIGNER Job

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA), a union with over 50,000 members working the in electric, gas, water and nuclear industries across the United States, is seeking a Senior Researcher/Campaigner who can help lead strategic planning, corporate research and industry research in support of the UWUA organizing program. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner is expected to play a key role with staff and UWUA elected leaders in the planning of campaign strategies and the implementation of tactics, including worker and community elements. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner participates in the development of UWUA programs and will eventually recruit and mentor campaign staff. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner works at his/her own initiative, independent of all but necessary supervision by UWUA Organizing Director. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner must coordinate and work closely with other UWUA staff and elected leadership. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner is a member of UWUA Senior Staff. The Senior Researcher/Campaigner is not involved in supervisory or personnel decisions.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Campaign and Operational Duties Develops plans and coordinates research components of campaigns. Works with UWUA staff and leaders to develop and support campaign goals, strategies and tactics. Plays a central role in campaign planning, including strategy development and worker, political and community elements, and implementation. Activates different levels of the UWUA structure to help coordinate UWUA resources supporting campaigns. Builds effective coalitions with other unions and organizations. Monitors UWUA resources and works to help ensure they are spent effectively.
Work Coordination Duties Participates in recruitment of staff for projects. Mentors and guides staff.
Programmatic Duties Represents the Organizing Department and the UWUA in internal and external forums as a leading technical expert and union/issue advocate; develops and maintains relationships with other UWUA staff, outside consultants, academics, community and issue activists and others. Works with key staff from UWUA, AFL-CIO, politicians and community groups to develop broad community, legal, political and workers issues. Participates in UWUA program analysis and goal setting. Participates in UWUA strategic research capacity-building efforts (including recruitment, training, research systems, etc.). Performs other duties as assigned. Ability to travel as required.
Reporting Keeps the Organizing Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting departmental programs. Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Masters degree or higher in relevant field preferred. Prior relevant work experience and demonstrated success in relevant areas.
