FIELD & RESEARCH COORDINATOR

Title:   Field & Research Coordinator

Reports to: Executive Director

Salary Range:  Commensurate with Experience

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Location: Washington, DC

 
SUMMARY
The National Public Pension Coalition is a 501(c) 4 non-profit organization created to effectively defend defined benefit plans for public employees, and to take the initiative to ensure that these plans continue to be the foundation of the retirement security of retired public-sector workers.  The Coalition’s supporting members include the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Change to Win (CTW), the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems (NCPERS), the National Education Association (NEA), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).  The coalition focuses on strategic planning and assessments, early warning systems, campaign-based research, initiation and support for state- and local-level coalitions; national message development, media relations, member education, and work with allies.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Field & Research Coordinator works independently and under the direction of the Executive Director and in cooperation with other NPPC staff to coordinate field activities and associated research projects.  This is a new position that demands previous successful campaign/field experience with unions or non-profit organizations.  The Field Coordinator will provide support to state-based campaigns and initiatives focused on promoting and defending public employee defined benefit pension benefits and overall retirement security.  Duties and responsibilities fall into three broad categories:

Coordinating projects in multiple states and with multiple external partners and stakeholders

  • Providing support to state-based coalitions including strategic analysis of threats, campaign development and management

  • Cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships with state affiliate unions, other employee groups and allies toward the development and maintenance of state based coalitions

  • Serving as one of the organizational leads to labor and non-labor partners engaged in strategic organizing campaigns at the state and local level

  • Responding to requests from partner organizations and stakeholders

  • Planning and executing campaign activities, events and actions

Tracking/Anticipating National Trends

  • Compiling and summarizing data related to state retirement systems in support of varied campaign goals

  • Maintaining a national calendar of all relevant campaign timelines, activities and actions 

  • Assessing and prioritizing opportunities to support organizing campaigns in states

Developing Models and Tools

  • Assisting in the development and dissemination of national messaging resulting from state-based campaigns and national research

  • Developing resources to build the capacity and coordination of state based coalitions

  • In conjunction with other staff, prioritizing organizational work by assessing both internal capacity and political costs and benefits

  • Assisting in maintaining member and stakeholder relationships through reporting on program activities, progress, and plans 

  • Developing tools for communicating with members, stakeholders and coalitions

  • Compiling models and best practices of state coalition activities for application to other efforts

  • Developing training and education materials in support of campaign goals

QUALIFICATONS and REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university; related advanced degree desirable, extensive field experience will be considered in lieu of a completed degree. 

  • Previous organizing, project management or field experience in unions, non-profits and/or the progressive movement required

  • Proven success as a facilitator highly desirable

  • Understanding of defined benefit pensions, retirement security issues and state retirement systems highly desirable.

  • Successful candidate will be a high-energy, high-output, highly organized individual with keen attention to detail, initiative and reliability

  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to work with diverse organizations and individuals with concrete results

  • Ability to develop strategic plans with concrete benchmarks and deliverables

  • Ability to work well under pressure and within tight deadlines

  • Ability to work independently and to plan, coordinate and carry out long-term strategies

  • Willing to travel extensively, work irregular hours, holidays, and weekends if necessary

  • Excellent judgment and discretion

  • Commitment to progressive social change 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly PowerPoint and Excel
