Strategic Research Manager

The IBEW, one of the ten largest labor organizations in North America, seeks a manager of strategic research. This is a senior level appointment. The manager will oversee the day-to-day work of a team of research analysts. She/he will work with departmental staff and organizers to develop research plans to support large-scale organizing campaigns as well as contract campaigns. A sense of the relationship between strategic research, campaign planning, and day-to-day ground organizing is required.

The successful candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to lead, motivate, and work cooperatively with a team of analysts in a high-pressure research environment. The candidate must be able to plan and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

A strong commitment to the broad goals of the organized labor movement is required.

Specific qualifications

Candidates should have demonstrated capacity in several of these areas:

● Ability to gather and interpret data from a myriad of sources, including on-line, government-based datasets, and field work (interviews with members, non-members, employers, customers). Ability to operate in quantitative and qualitative research modes.
● Ability to conduct, supervise, and/or coordinate corporate financial analyses. Ability to conduct industry research (including analysis of market dynamics, labor costs, productivity, workforce demographics, union density, technological change) and legislative, regulatory, and public policy research.
● Ability to work cooperatively with organizers, representatives of trade departments, and other functional departments (such as safety and health, media, and legal) to develop research agendas for campaigns.
● Ability to frame broad-scale research questions and execute research in a team-based environment.
● Ability to organize ongoing education and training for research analysts (databases research techniques,
etc.), and to oversee ongoing assessment of databases and other information sources.

Educational background

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required. Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD in a scientific or social scientific field, MBA, or JD) preferred.
