EDUCATOR / RESEARCHER
The California
Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee - AFL-CIO, the
nation’s largest independent nurses’ union and professional association,
seeks an experienced Educator/Researcher to assist in developing labor
oriented educational and research programs for Registered Nurses. Programs
will emphasize the political economy of international healthcare restructuring
and the clinical and legal, ethical, or technological impacts of healthcare
restructuring on both patients and the Registered Nurses that provide
their care.
CNA/NNOC is leading
the movement for Registered Nurse power to transform the market-driven
healthcare industry in the United States into a health care system driven
by patient need. CNA/NNOC has negotiated the best Registered Nurse (RN)
collective bargaining contracts in the nation and was responsible for
California’s RN Safe Staffing Law - the first of its kind nationwide.
After appropriate
orientation, the Educator/Researcher Candidate will design and teach
one day courses on international health care restructuring, legal and
ethical issues impacting nursing practice and basic principles of political
economy for Registered Nurses. The Educator/Researcher will also work
as part of the research team, assisting with international analysis
of all sectors of the US Health Care industry and its relation to the
broader political economy; providing research & other support to
collective bargaining, organizing and organizational policy.
This is not a traditional
labor educator position. The ideal Candidate will have:
- At least one
professional degree as well as one advanced degree in health law or
health policy is required.
- A degree or other
indication of expertise in Ethical theory with specific familiarity
in health ethics.
- A minimum of
2 years experience working full time with a labor union representing
health care workers, with extensive knowledge of representational,
legal, ethical and educational issues facing Registered Nurses.
- Familiarity and
a background in political/economy, the epistemological problematic
inherent in computerized expert systems, labor process studies, complex
organizational analysis, the philosophy of science generally, the
social aspects of technological design and implementation, demonstrated
competence in both quantitative and qualitative social research, and
the ability to teach complex material in a way that is accessible
to a broad audience are essential.
- Demonstrated
experience at teaching medical issues, ethics and health ethics to
adults, and in particular those training or employed in the nursing
field.
- Substantial background
in issues of the international healthcare industry, health care reform
and restructuring of medical care, legal and ethical issues of health
care, in at least two countries outside the U.S.
- Top rate research
skills. Ability to conduct complex international legal, policy, political
and ethical healthcare research.
- Excellent writing
skills, as demonstrated in published scholarly articles or books.
- Superior oral
advocacy and public presentation skills as demonstrated in relevant
work experience.
- Familiarity in
teaching successful intensive workshops and experience teaching at
the post-secondary level
- Experience at
working closely with others as part of an interdisciplinary health
policy team
- An ability to
work under pressure and ability to meet deadlines is essential.
- Ability to travel
extensively.
