COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
Center for Public Accountability


WHO WE ARE:
Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 721 is an 80,000-member Southern California regional public employee union whose members provide public services in diverse fields, including health care, social services, special districts, private non-profits, libraries, courts, parks and recreation, public works and mental health in cities and counties throughout Southern California. The Center for Public Accountability (CPA) supports Local 721's mission by:

  • Analyzing and reporting on the quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of publicly-funded services.
  • Providing comprehensive support for workers organizing to transform public sector workplaces by winning union recognition.
    The Communications Specialist will work out of our Los Angeles office

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Communications Specialist will develop and implement winning communications plans for Local 721 organizing and public accountability campaigns.

  • Contributes creatively to all aspects of campaign strategic planning, as a member of multi-disciplinary campaign teams.
  • Develops and implements all aspects of campaign communications plans in close coordination with other team members.
  • Trains and leads union staff and activists on effective messaging.
  • Writes, edits and designs leaflets, newsletters, brochures, posters, web-based publications, blog postings, ads and all other campaign communications materials.
  • Uses the full range of campaign communication tools to transmit an effective message.
  • Effectively uses earned and paid media to achieve success in Local 721 campaigns.


SKILLS:

  • Understanding of and commitment to Local 721's members and mission;
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong writing and editing skills;
  • Skill and self-confidence in projecting the union's message;
  • Demonstrated design, verbal, visual/graphic, interviewing and analytical communications skills;
  • Two or more years in campaign communications, labor communications, public affairs, community organizing, journalism or related fields;
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure of tight deadlines and conflicting demands;
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when needed by a campaign;
  • Knowledge of HTML and web publishing software, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, and GetActive/Convio a plus.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • You must possess a valid California driver's license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

  • Salary range: $67,166.84 (entry level) to $82,331.60 (with 10 plus years of experience)
  • Fully paid benefit package including medical, dental, vision and a generous life insurance.
