Support Worker Organizing Campaigns in Northern California

The Service Employees International Union is the nation’s fastest growing labor organization with more than 2 million members.  SEIU is on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers and engaging in larger social issues such as health care, housing, and immigration.

The Property Services Division of SEIU is home to the Justice for Janitors and Stand for Security organizing campaigns, as well as campaigns to organize airport workers, workers in malls and other retail sites, stadiums and arenas and more.    These campaigns are all part of exciting national drives to empower workers to unionize and improve working conditions as well as win significant wage gains, health insurance, and full-time work.

SEIU USWW has a research position available immediately, based in Oakland.

Job Description

Researcher will work as a member of the research center team.  Together with organizing leads, political and communications staff, researcher will work to develop and implement corporate, legal, legislative, and regulatory strategies to advance organizing and bargaining campaigns. Work will also include tracking key real estate players and industrial trends, doing company profiles, as well as personal investigative research.  

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to progressive social change and activist experience.

  • Proven ability to utilize information from and about workers, employers, economic / financial research on company or industry to inform and develop campaign strategies.

  • Strong research & quantitative skills.  Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, & Access and a variety of computer-based research tools.

  • Excellent writing and communications skills a must.

  • Familiarity with basics of accounting and corporate financial analysis. 

  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines and in a team environment.

  • Proven ability to lead research staff within a labor or progressive community organization (for Leads).

  • Ability to speak Spanish, Cantonese, Tagalog, or Korean a plus.

  • Must have car and insurance.   Car allowance provided.
