Job Announcement: Union Organizer/OIT Position
SEIU United Long Term Care Workers union, a statewide labor organization representing over 176,000 long-term care workers in California, is looking for highly motivated and skilled individuals seeking to contribute to building a strong and vibrant social and economic justice movement. Location: Oakland, California
Organizers help workers form, build, and grow our union; assist workers to develop into active union members and leaders, negotiate and enforce their union contracts; mobilize workers around worksite issues, politics, public policy, and other issues affecting the lives of workers; develop rank-and-file leadership among workers; and carry out all other programs of the union in the field.
Responsibilities Included:
- Membership recruitment and COPE/PAF (Committee on Political Empowerment/Political Accountability Fund) Fundraising. This is seen as a primary duty of an organizer, with COPE contribution/membership indivisible from membership recruitment goals.
- Communicate with workers via house visits, worksite visits, organizing meetings, phone calls and literature, for example; prepare meeting agendas and other communication tools such as newsletters, emails, fliers, etc.
- Assess, identify, recruit and deploy worker leaders
- Develop worker leaders by training them, mentoring them and holding them accountable for executing the Local’s program in workplaces and communities.
- Plan one’s own work as assigned; make and execute daily, weekly, and monthly work plans based on assigned goals and objectives.
- Engage in research to gather information about workers, employers, and economic and financial conditions; integrate this research into campaigns.
- Operate Windows-based computer programs in order to perform campaign and worksite list keeping and data management and to complete personal clerical work.
- Build organizing, bargaining, contract action, and other worker committees.
- Identify legal, regulatory, community, media and other resources, and appropriately utilize these resources in campaigns.
- Use Board (NLRB or PERC) and non-board strategies to win union recognition for workers.
- Mobilize and lead workers in actions, up to and including strike actions, to support union’s bargaining and issue agendas.
- Develop and execute programs to mobilize member-volunteers for labor-to-labor political campaigns, grassroots lobbying, issue campaigns, ballot initiative campaigns, media activity, fundraising, and legislative advocacy in support of the union’s collective bargaining and issue advocacy agenda.
- Lead workers in community issues and build relationships with relevant community allies and partners
- Assist the Local in the field by tracking and reporting information on worker and employer issues and activity, industry conditions, community, political and media relations, and other relevant activity.
- Represent the Union as assigned with community partners, employers and other industry leaders.
- Work in an effective team with members and with local, international staff and Change to Win labor coalition, CLC, or staff of other allied organizations when assigned to a collaborative project
Qualifications While previous experience in union organizing is highly desirable, there is no hard and fast requirement for experience to start a career as an organizer in training.Experience with the following types of employers is highly significant: labor unions, progressive issue advocacy organizations, community organizations, political campaigns and staff of elected officials.Very strong preference will be given to candidates who have completed the SEIU “Wave” training program or other formal training programs for organizers.
- Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU and to the specific program of SEIU ULTCW.
- The ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment are considered key components to achieving organizer performance standards.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Basic computer literacy (or the ability to develop computer literacy within the initial six months of employment for the OIT position)
- Willingness and ability to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends

- Willingness and ability to travel throughout state of California
Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred
