Job Announcement: Senior Organizer

Position Purpose:

SEIU United Long Term Care Workers union, a statewide labor organization representing over 179,000 long-term care workers in California, is looking for highly motivated and skilled individuals seeking to contribute to building a strong and vibrant social and economic justice movement.  SEIU ULTCW is committed to reflecting the unique diversity of our members’ geography, work, language and race to build a powerful vision of change for working families in California. 

Organizers help workers form, build, and grow our union; assist workers to negotiate and enforce their union contracts; mobilize workers around worksite issues, politics, public policy, and other issues affecting the lives of workers; develop rank-and-file leadership among workers; and carry out all other programs of the union in the field. 
The role of the Senior Organizer is to provide leadership, direction and development to Internal Organizing staff as it relates to carrying out the vision, goals and respective campaigns of the union.  The Senior Organizer reports directly to the Member Strength Director or his/her designee.

Duties and Responsibilities: Senior Organizer (representative)

The Senior Organizer performs a wide range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall union program or a specific campaign.  Examples of those duties and responsibilities are listed below:

  1. Train and assist staff in identifying, recruiting, developing, and partnering with leaders to successfully implement the mission, goals and work of the union

  2. Coordinate teams of staff and members in developing and implementing industry vision, programs, and campaigns

  3. Challenge staff and assist to embrace change in all aspects of their work

  4. Help develop and direct campaigns to resolve workplace issues.

  5. Develops within his/her Division specific organizing campaigns for represented and unrepresented facilities.

  6. Works closely with the Organizing Director to ensure campaign targets are aligned with Int’l Division priorities and local union priorities.

  • Under the guidance of Member Strength, coordinates with Int’l Division and other Long-Term Care Locals on statewide strategies for bargaining and policy.

  • Develops strategic bargaining plan; bargains contracts and represent workers as may be necessary.  Ensures the handling of contract renewals, grievances and arbitration as per SEIU’s coordinated approach and standards.

  •  In coordination with Member Strength, acts as the chief spokesperson and negotiator and oversees all other negotiators in collective bargaining for assigned representational units.

  • Interprets collective bargaining agreements to members, staff, stewards and other workers.

  • Testifies as expert witness before various agencies.

  • Evaluates and initiates requests for arbitration and other third party proceedings

  •  Analyzes employee relation problems and recommends solutions to workers, stewards, staff and officials of the Union or employer

  • Guide integration of politics, community relationships and organizing support into the daily work of staff

  • Participate in and/or lead new organizing and political campaigns as needed

  • Train, develop and hold staff accountable in all aspects of their work

  • Evaluate staff; develop and implement staff development plans

  • Cover for vacation and trouble shoot on particularly difficult staff assignments

  • As part of supervisory team, contribute to organizational vision and manage the local’s strategic plans and campaigns

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Plan and run comprehensive organizing and contract campaigns, as assigned

 

Required Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Ability to lead staff in a way that motivates and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e. politics, organizing, bargaining, etc.)

  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment

  • Ability to frame issues and articulate organizational values and priorities

  • Ability to lead and work effectively as part of a team

  • Ability to organize his/her time and that of staff on his/her team

  • Ability to receive direction from and interact with his or her immediate supervisor when it becomes necessary

  • Ability to develop and carry out plans with sound independent judgment and minimum supervision

  • Demonstrated understanding of the organizing model and how it can be used to empower members and insure superior outcomes in workers’ lives.

  • Ability to perform basic “messaging” around campaigns in line with specific audiences and communities

  • Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing staff for new roles and responsibilities within the union and provide the support needed to be successful.

  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality staff and member experience including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining issues and human resource management principles.

  • Ability to develop member leaders to deal with work based issues.

  • Sound organizational skills to assist staff in managing and prioritizing work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term staff and member development and capacity building   goals.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases and Internet.

  • Bilingual skills preferred

  •  A minimum of five years of experience as a Union staff person leading multiple teams of staff and at least 2 years contract bargaining experience with increasing responsibilities.

  • In depth knowledge of relevant special body of knowledge including labor law like NLRA, MMBA, FLSA, Cal OSHA, FMLA, Title 22, ADA, Workers Compensation, etc. and the ability to monitor and interpret Federal and State legislation as it pertains to membership and labor relations.

  • Proven ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.
