JOB TITLE Lead Organizer
PURPOSE
This position is responsible for the development and implementation of 3299’s organizing plan at the University of California. The lead organizer will conduct a wide array of organizing activities, including leadership identification and recruitment, training members and staff, running elections, strategic planning, and running multiple comprehensive organizing campaigns. Lead organizing staff in organizing campaigns.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification.)
•
Working with Executive Board Members, Member Action Team Leaders, and Staff Organizers, professionally develops and implements plans reflective of the 3299 model and in keeping with union’s statewide strategy.
•
With other Leads, participate in development of statewide strategy.
•
Supervise the organizing and development of a team of staff organizers and union leave organizers, including helping them successfully articulate the union’s message.
•
Motivate, inspire, train and direct staff members.
•
Participates in hiring, and evaluation of staff.
•
Provides for recruitment and development of Member Action Team leaders and lost time organizers from within the workforce and for their training in one-on-one communications, house calling, mobilization and other campaign elements.
•
Lead and develop campaign plans with the goals, strategies and tactics necessary to execute the plan.
•
Develops campaign plans that involve the need for staff, volunteers, communications, offices, budget allocations, and other resources.
•
Ability to run comprehensive components in organizing campaigns.
•
Writes leaflets and other materials for organizing campaigns.
•
Writes reports and proposals regarding organizing, political, and other campus wide activities.
•
Informs Director of activities, developments and progress of assigned campaigns.
Directions and Decision Making
This position reports to a Director and/or other supervisor. Direct supervision and direction will be from a Director or other supervisor as assigned. Lead Organizers are expected to report regularly to a Director or other assigned supervisor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma and 2 years experience leading organizing campaigns; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

A strong commitment to building a progressive labor movement through organizing the unorganized.
•
Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles, and of anti-union employer tactics.
•
Demonstrated ability to lead workers through struggle.
•
Demonstrated ability to lead organizers in an organizing campaign.
•
Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
•
Skills at managing and meeting many and varying deadlines.
•
Effective informal and formal negotiating skills.
•
Excellent analytical and judgment skills as demonstrable by the ability to assess information and evidence, and act strategically.
•
Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills showing flexibility as needed; adept at dealing with conflicting/changing priorities.
•
Effective facilitating and organizing meeting skills.
•
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
•
Good oral and written communication skills.
•
Basic knowledge of labor laws, especially with respect to union organizing.
•
Basic computer skills, such as Word, Excel, and E-Mail Programs.
Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required. Valid driver’s license, auto and auto insurance required.
