CLEAN Carwash Campaign
The CLEAN Carwash Campaign is seeking a full-time Lead Organizer for the carwash worker organizing drive in Los Angeles, CA.
CLEAN stands for Community-Labor-Environmental Action Network, and is a diverse coalition of labor, immigrant rights, community, religious, and student organizations that supports the organizing efforts of carwash workers who are fighting for better wages, working conditions, and dignity and respect on the job. Carwash workers have formed the Carwash Workers Organizing Committee of the United Steelworkers (CWOC-USW) to organize and win union recognition by carwash employers.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Lead Organizer implements and assists in developing the organizing plan of the CLEAN carwash campaign. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Directing organizing staff and member organizers on campaigns;
- Providing input to the Campaign Director in the evaluation of organizing staff;
- Evaluating potential organizing targets;
- Initiating direct contact with workers;
- Developing leadership and structure of organizing campaigns.
- Supervise and direct other organizers in identifying community leaders and building a network of community leaders in other designated areas;
- Work with local union leaders and community allies along with staff to assist in campaigns;
- Provide training for organizing staff;
- Develop materials, work plans and accountability systems for implementation of organizing plans;
- Plan, coordinate and implement organizing support programs, including data base management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position reports directly to the Campaign Director.
Qualifications
- Minimum five to six years organizing campaign experience;
- Demonstrated proficiency in lead organizer skills and lead organizing experience;
- Experience working with union leaders, staff and members in campaigns;
- Experience leading campaigns involving faith, political and community organization leaders, staff and members;
- Experience working in politically sensitive environments;
- Strong writing, research and communications skills;
- Strong listening and persuasion skills;
- Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in high-pressure environment;
- Ability to work independently within the context of a plan;
- Ability to meet deadlines in a high-pressure environment;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects;
- Ability to use basic word processing, data base programs and e-mail;
- Ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends;
- Able to travel on a regular basis, sometimes extensively and for long periods of time;
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) a necessity.
Salary: Negotiable depending on experience. Benefits package provided.
