AFTRA External Organizing Research Analyst
The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, AFL-CIO (AFTRA), is a national labor union representing over 70,000 professional performers, broadcasters, and recording artists working in the entertainment and news media. AFTRA's scope of representation covers broadcast and cable television (animation, award shows, children’s programming, commercials, documentaries, dramatic programs, game shows, infomercials, music videos, news, reality shows, daytime drama, sports, talk shows, variety shows, video news releases, voice over, and weather); radio (news/sports, commercials, and hosted programs); sound recordings; interactive games; “non-broadcast” material such as educational and training videos, and content created for Internet and wireless distribution.
The External Organizing Research Analyst will play a vital role in the union’s organizing campaigns by conducting corporate research and assisting in the development and implementation of strategies and tactics to advance campaigns. Work includes tracking industry trends and key players in the media and entertainment industry, as well as corporate and individual research. Responsibilities Include:
- Under the direction of the National Director of Organizing, perform in-depth research to understand media and entertainment industry finances and corporate operations, detail employers' practices, track business trends and emerging business models in the industry, and assist senior leadership in guiding the union's relationships with other stakeholders.
- Summarize and interpret data from a variety of public and private sources including: regulatory filings, financial statements, cost reports.
- Provide recommendations and findings to the National Executive Director, National Director of Organizing and contract departments as needed to support presentation of complex issues/findings, both in writing and orally, to a range of audiences including government regulators, politicians, organizing staff, elected leadership and member activists.
- Interface with National Director of Internal Research/Governance on internal and external data relevant to specific external organizing and bargaining campaigns.
Qualifications Required:
- One to three years of experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, graduate degree strongly preferred.
- Strong technical research skills and experience in applying research to development and implementation external organizing and bargaining campaigns.
- Familiarity with corporate research, financial analysis, employment law and/or investigative journalism
- Experience with a variety of computer-based research tools and database and spreadsheet applications including Access and Excel.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and excellent communication, writing and quantitative skills.
- Must be a self-starter, with significant project management skills and ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of entertainment, broadcasting and/or sound recording industries, as well as issues affecting creative artists and professional workers strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish preferred.
Position will be based in either Los Angeles or New York. Occasional travel required. Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including weekends also required.
Salary: $55,000 – 65,000, plus benefits, depending upon experience. This is an exempt position.
