Salary Range: $81,235 - $113, 516 (Steps 1-5 on a 10-step salary schedule, depending on qualifications and experience), plus benefit package: health, dental, vision plans and retirement program.

Job Summary:
The AFT affiliate in California represents school employees, certificated and classified, at every level of public and private education - preschool and Head Start, K-12 public and private schools, community colleges, private higher education, and the University of California.

Under the direction of the CFT President or designee, the Communications Specialist is responsible for the development and management of the digital media program and strategy design of the Federation to its members and the public on key issues. Assists with internal and external communications in writing, editing and deploying press releases, op-eds, newsletters and e-newsletters, articles, flyers, pamphlets, and in producing content and support of the CFT website. Implements effective advertising of campaigns and press events through digital media and maintains effective relationships with media/reporters and conducting media outreach.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Experience in journalism and digital media relations with unions, political and/or social advocacy organizations, or the equivalent, implementing social media campaigns and outreach, and executing press events.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing education and workers
  • in California and the nation.
  • Current California driver’s license and a vehicle in good driving condition.

Duties and responsibilities
Develop, implement, and maintain the public relations image of the Federation through digital media; management and dissemination of internal and external media communications as defined by leadership; assist to define and maintain a positive image of the Federation and its membership; assist with design and implementation of strategic campaigns through digital media. Works collaboratively with all communication and publication avenues defined within the Federation to create a multi-faceted member communications strategy to reach members across a range of platforms.

Membership in the CFT Field Representatives Union is required.
