San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO

Political and Legislative Director

Based in San Diego, CA

The San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, representing over 130 local union affiliates and over 200,000 working families, seeks a Political and Legislative Director to help build a strong, progressive movement for working families and communities in our region. Over the next decade, the Labor Council will build upon a strong foundation to accomplish the following:

  • Raise Wages and Working Conditions for all workers, in a region in which nearly 4 out of 10 families do not earn enough to make basic ends meet;
  • Increase Union Density, particularly in high growth sectors of the regional economy;
  • Create new, family-supporting jobs by growing an ecologically sustainable economy in the region;
  • Build a strong and vibrant public education system supported by a progressive tax base in the region, from pre-k through K-12 through higher education, apprenticeship;
  • Enhance participatory democracy in the region, by increasing the percentages of people in our community who vote and who contribute their voice to key public policy decisions that affect our families’ futures.

The Political and Legislative Director plays a critical role in helping to organize our labor and progressive community around this vision, with responsibility to:

  • Work with the Secretary-Treasurer, Executive Board, other Labor Council staff and key community and elected allies to develop and carry out our Public Policy Agenda;
  • Design and Implement our Electoral Campaign programs;
  • Monitor campaign finance reporting and serve as Treasurer for all of the Labor Council’s political committees;
  • Lead our lobbying and advocacy activity on labor’s legislative priorities;
  • Design and Implement a long-term Voter Engagement Strategy, working with our member unions to increase voter participation among union members, and with our community partners to increase voter participation in targeted neighborhoods;
  • Leverage our political relationships in support of our unions’ collective bargaining campaigns and other worker actions;
  • Work with Political Coordinators from affiliated unions to create an integrated, cohesive political program;
  • Support committees of the Labor Council, as assigned;
  • Work with our Communications Director to develop a comprehensive communications strategy to educate the public about the mission and values of the labor movement;
  • Maintain strong relationships with the California Labor Federation, the AFL-CIO, and other key allies across the state and country;
  • Serve as a member of the CLC’s senior leadership team.

Key Qualities

  • Humility and a willingness to put the needs of workers above personal ambitions;
  • Ability to listen and to organize people by drawing out their own passion and motivation, rather than an expectation that people will take marching orders;
  • Ability to build consensus, rather than create division, among union and community partners;
  • Ability to learn quickly, to maintain flexibility, and to stay focused and organized in complex and ever- changing circumstances;
  • A self-starter who enjoys having freedom to create and try new strategies, rather than someone waiting for direction;
  • Willingness and stamina to work long and unpredictable hours;
  • A demonstrated ability to work well with a highly diverse set of colleagues and partners, and to make a team stronger.

Experience

  • 5-8 years of political, legislative, or campaign experience;
  • Familiarity with San Diego and Imperial County politics;
  • A demonstrated passion for social and economic justice and a successful track record of creating positive change;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to and familiarity with the labor movement.
