External Organizing Coordinator

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The External Organizing Coordinator will lead field operations and co-lead overall strategic planning for major external organizing campaigns or multiple small campaigns. She/he must work collegially with the Organizing Department’s senior leadership team to develop and implement external organizing plans. An Organizing Coordinator is responsible for the success of her/his team. She/he will direct the work of lead and entry-level organizers; guide staff development; guide lead organizers on effective management of their teams; identify and develop candidates for promotion; recommend and implement discipline. Responsible for preparing work plans, calendars, files, reports and other records. This is not a 9 to 5 job - long and varied hours, with early morning, evening and weekend work, as necessary. This is an exempt position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement campaign plans for assigned external organizing campaigns;
  • Supervise the work and development of assigned staff;
  • Where needed, serve as primary spokesperson in external organizing campaigns;
  • Identify and oversee implementation of legal, community and political strategies;
  • Oversee the development of a coordinated communications during external organizing campaigns;

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:

  • Commitment to building long-term power for working people.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, facilitate meetings, and conduct training.
  • Proven strong supervisory skills, preferably including experience supervising other managers.
  • Excellent analytical and program planning skills.
  • Proven ability to manage in a manner which inspires, motivates, develops and maintains good working relations with diverse membership and staff.
  • Ability to take initiative, to work with a team, and to handle a fast-paced setting, multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of legal, political, economic and industry forces that impact organizing campaigns; preferably including experience working with elected, community groups and other potential allies.
  • Shall possess relevant education and/or experience in bargaining, as well as de-certifications and agency shop.
  • Knowledge of labor laws relating to the public and private sector and non-profit industries

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of Word and PowerPoint, as well as working knowledge of spreadsheets and database software.
  • Minimum five (5) years External Organizing experience. Must include experience developing and leading external organizing campaigns, preferably in the private and public sectors.
  • You must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance, and an automobile for business use.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities.
  • A minimum of (3) years’ experience managing staff and members on external organizing campaigns.
  • Commitment to building long-term power for working people.
  • Strong background in labor and organizing.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in bargaining contracts and union campaigns.
