Research/Policy Analyst

The organization envisions local government as an effective champion for the common good, and works to enable residents of all communities to have an informed and powerful voice in decisions affecting their quality of life.

CPI seeks a Research/Policy Analyst who is passionate about economic and social justice, meticulous about research, able to strategically plan and implement both short- and long-term research and issue-based campaign work and comfortable speaking to a wide variety of audiences including community groups, elected officials and the media.

CPI’s Research & Policy Department informs policy development and campaign strategy and educates the public and key decision makers on issues related to the economy, equity, low- wage work, economic mobility, public services, and public investment in key areas including infrastructure, transportation, and affordable housing. The position reports to the Deputy Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead campaign efforts including developing collective goals, leading strategic planning, and connecting research and public policy with organizing.
  • Conduct research on policy issues, impacts and potential solutions.
  • Write op-eds, memos, policy briefs and reports.
  • Create presentation and present research findings orally at community meetings, government hearings, and other venues.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations and government officials.
  • Collaborate with CPI communication and organizing staff to meet campaign goals.
  • Partner with communications and organizing staff to develop accessible education materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience writing and/or analyzing public policies.
  • Experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to write and organize engaging, clear and precise reports and articles. Verbal communications skills sufficient to convey information in a clear, concise way, synthesizing information as appropriate for the audience.
  • Understanding of the critical role of the labor movement in achieving social and economic justice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with government officials (elected, appointed, staff) on policy issues, with a preference for experience in the San Diego region.
  • Proven project management and organization skills, including using workplans effectively, managing a team to complete projects successfully, working independently, troubleshooting, prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute meaningful, focused research.
  • Experience working with communities of color, immigrant communities, and/or people whose first or only language is other than English.
  • Proven skills at working in a team and with partner organizations advocating for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.
  • Familiarity with the San Diego region.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: CPI’s salary and benefit standards are competitive and will depend on qualifications and experience.
