Based in the East Texas Region – Nacogdoches/Lufkin area, TX

Texas AFT is seeking a full-time Lead Organizer for the East Texas region in the Nacogdoches/Lufkin area. This position reports to the designated Regional Coordinator and plays a leadership role in the daily organizing activities within the designated region of Texas. Our organizing work includes consolidation within established locals, working with Organizing Committees to build new locals, and new organizing within the associate membership program.

Applicants should have several years of experience in organizing and a demonstrated ability to lead. Experience running or acting as a lead in an external organizing campaign is preferred. This position involves often long and irregular hours, some weekend work, and travel.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Lead Organizer performs a wide range of duties, including:

  • Supervises organizers’ daily activities via frequent ride-along and daily debriefs
  • Report to the Regional Coordinator on progress toward campaign goals, staff performance, and other issues concerning the ground operation
  • Assists with organizer training and ongoing staff development
  • Helps to maintain a consistent theme and message in the organizers’ conversations through debriefs, redirection, practicing the rap, and role playing as necessary
  • Assists with meetings, event planning, turnout, and phone banks as assigned
  • Oversees the maintenance of wall charts for all organizers in the region
  • Oversees the maintenance of up-to-date data entry for all organizers in the region and assists with data entry where necessary
  • Assists with membership trainings and activists trainings throughout the region as assigned
  • Assists with member servicing in a limited capacity as assigned by the Regional Coordinator
  • Occasionally, assignment as a formula rep in other parts of the state or country as required for short periods of time


  • Strong commitment to the labor movement
  • Knowledge of public sector unions in non-collective bargaining situations
  • Demonstrated skill as an organizer in the field
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate workers and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to achieve goals
  • Demonstrated ability to use a high level of judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse people
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate staff’s strengths and weaknesses and provide training in a positive way
  • Lead experience is preferred
  • Strong spoken and written English and Spanish-language skills are preferred
  • Computer literacy is required
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required

The Lead Organizer position receives $60,000/year with a competitive benefits package governed by a collective bargaining agreement.
