The Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is the largest labor federation and considered to be the voice of labor in the state of Washington. The WSLC represents over 600 local unions and over 450,000 union workers, serving as the political, legislative and policy, communications and solidarity arm of the labor movement.

The Field Mobilization Director serves as a liaison between the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and its affiliates and Central Labor Councils (CLC) in the recruitment and coordination of volunteers to participate in the political, legislative, and organizing programs of the Labor Council.

The Field Director helps develop and organize field strategies, including walks, phone banks, rallies and actions with the goal of strengthening and growing the labor movement’s numbers, political power, and participation in political and legislative programs.

The Field Director engages our affiliates and CLCs with community partners to influence voter turnout and success for candidates and initiatives.

The Field Director will report to the President of the WSLC and will work collaboratively with the Political and Strategic Campaign Director and the legislative team.


  • Provide direction and support to affiliates and CLC leads on field activities for electoral work, the legislative rapid-response program, and general organizing efforts.
  • Serve as lead staff on Labor Neighbor/Labor’s Voice programs and oversee efficient and strategic use of resources for related efforts.
  • Provide direction and oversight for temporary and loaned field staff, direct assignments and serve as a resource for CLC and affiliate field staff.
  • Coordinate grassroots efforts to support political and policy advocacy work of the WSLC.
  • Work with the Political Director to develop labor candidate recruitment strategies and trainings to build a progressive farm team for a wide range of future elected positions.
  • Work with the President to draft, implement, and direct WSLC’s organizing and Field plan.
  • Coordinate with the lobbying team to develop a local union/rank-and-file legislative and political rapid response network in targeted districts and throughout the state.
  • Manage the “My Campaigns” data for AFL-CIO and coordinate with local CLCs and affiliates, and coordinate a master calendar of events for electoral and legislative engagement opportunities.
  • Maintain and strengthen activist database with CLCs and affiliates for political action and lobbying.
  • Serve as lead staff responsible for managing centralized data from LAN, developing targeted universes, cut doorbelling turf, manage phone banks, and draft corresponding scripts.
  • Serve as lead advisor for affiliate and CLC field efforts and report to national on field capacity, plans and affiliate engagement efforts.
  • Serve as lead political staff on the Coordinated side during election cycles.
  • Work with the Communications Director on developing mailing materials and literature for target campaigns.
  • Help raise voluntary COPE contributions through COPE button sales and participation with President’s Club membership.
  • Engage with local affiliates, CLCs, and community partners in GOTV events and Field strategies.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


  • Union and/or community organizing experience; knowledge of and experience with the labor movement.
  • Working knowledge of the state legislative process and how political campaigns operate.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communications skills – listening, interpersonal, written and verbal.
  • Ability to lead and to motivate others.
  • Demonstrated ability to build teams and to work effectively in a team environment in both a lead and a support role
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Positive attitude and strong team player.
  • Public speaking and training experience.
  • At least five (5) years political/legislative and union experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.


  • Salary Range: $75,000 – $ 100,000
