This position is a result of a joint project between ALASKA PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION/AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS (APEA/AFT) and the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS (AFT).

State Affiliate Political Organizer (SAPO) Job Description

Position: Political/Membership Organizer. 

Main Purpose of the Job: 
Coordinate the national AFT political and legislative agenda and program with APEA/AFT’s program and develop mobilization programs with the affiliated Locals of APEA/AFT. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 
The SAPO will be responsible for strengthening the internal, political and legislative education programs of APEA/AFT and the American Federation of Teachers through:

  • Developing and implementing an effective and accountable member-to-member communication system;
  • Identifying and recruiting activists among the APEA/AFT membership;
  • Facilitating and guiding APEA/AFT participation in coalition groups;
  • Increasing APEA/AFT political fundraising;
  • Considerable traveling in the state;
  • Other duties assigned by the Business Manager of APEA/AFT and/or the American Federation of Teachers. 

Qualifications: 
Commitment to the goals of the Alaska Public Employees Association/American Federation of Teachers.  Bachelor’s degree preferred and/or demonstrated experience organizing or performing campaign work. 

Experience: 

  • Strong computer, writing, speaking, fundraising and training skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours.
  • Ability to work well with groups and individuals with a wide variety of personalities, needs and occupations. 
  • Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Preferred:  experience with collective bargaining, contract administration/grievance handling, membership development, governmental or political advocacy and communications experience. 
  • Computer skills especially relating to data base management and the creation of documents and flyers.  This position shall be based in Anchorage.  Salary DOE plus benefits. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3-5 years of experience designing and implementing political and/or union grassroots or related programs;
  • A demonstrated writing ability and the ability to communicate the union’s goals and objectives to affiliates;
  • Experience with campaign field writing or fundraising is a plus;
  • Working knowledge of Alaska coalitions and groups with which APEA/AFT participates is a plus.
