Political Director
United Working Families seeks a Political Director to develop and execute UWF’s workplan to build durable political will, organization, and a candidate pipeline to move a bold left agenda. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex electoral, legislative, and organizing campaigns, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and a sophisticated analysis of the current political landscape. This is a political position in a collaborative, fast-paced, and innovative environment; the work will require travel, weeknight, and weekend hours.

This position is based in Chicago.

Accountability: The position is directly accountable to the Executive Director.


  • Identify, recruit, and train candidates from the ranks of member organizations and movements to run coordinated political program
  • Work with stakeholders to design and execute coordinated electoral program
  • Work with organization staff and leadership to optimize usage of voter data year-round and continually learn and improve.


  • Develop and lead UWF’s legislative strategy and workplan to produce desired electoral and policy outcomes in the mid- and long-term.
  • Work with elected officials, affiliated organizations, and other allies to achieve legislative priorities and execute strategy

Research and Communications:

  • Work with vendors and stakeholders to conduct and integrate public opinion research into UWF’s electoral and legislative workplanning
  • Shape public messaging and communications strategy to support electoral and legislative campaigns


  • Oversee the growth, management, and budget of UWF’s political department
  • Represent the party as needed in local, state, and national coalitions; work with coalition partners on aligned campaigns
  • Work with party leadership to drive ongoing reflection, learning, innovation, and improvement.

Other: In addition to the specific job responsibilities, the staff member will perform other tasks as requested.

Evaluation: The work will be evaluated based upon this job description, the specific goals and objectives established, and the person’s contributions in meeting the overall goals and objectives of the organization.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience in grassroots organizing, labor, and/or politics, preferably with experience in building grassroots organization with a culture of democracy and debate
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and experience working in communities of color
  • Strong commitment to racial, social, economic and gender justice
  • Strong commitment to independent, innovative political action by and for working people
  • Proven track record of planning, managing and executing complex electoral and legislative campaigns
  • A goal-driven, detail-oriented self-starter and problem-solver with ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Experience with and knowledge of Illinois politics
  • Acute political savvy and excellent analytical skills
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Bi-lingual Spanish/English strongly preferred
  • Experience with paid and/or labor electoral programs preferred
