Unit Description and/or Conditions Unique to the Assignment
Tri-City Educators UniServ (TCEU) represents two medium sized CTA Chapters, the Downey Education Association (DEA) with 1088 members and the Teachers Association of the Norwalk-La Mirada Area (TANLA) with 995 members.  Members are distributed at over fifty school sites in the Downey Unified School District and the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District.  Most School sites are within a 15 minute drive of the TCEU office.  TCEU is housed in an office that employs a fulltime Associate Staff and also serves as the office for both local chapter presidents.  The presidents of DEA and TANLA are both full-time release Presidents.  Both chapters have agency fee provisions in the Master Collective Bargaining Agreements and relatively few agency fee payers.

TANLA has had a long history of collaboration with the school district. DEA currently has a very good relationship with the district.  Organizational capacity building is an extremely important aspect of this position and the successful candidate will be expected to continue to provide strong support and guidance in this area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibility to serve as an organizer and consultant to DEA and TANLA in the development of chapter organization, chapter service programs, contract negotiations, contract maintenance and membership engagement and retention.
  • Provide staff assistance and service as a consultant to chapter leadership and to members in negotiations, grievances, organizational development, chapter communications and membership engagement and retention.
  • Serve as consultant and staff resource to both Unit’s Board of Directors and Representative Councils on current problems and issues facing the education profession in California. 
  • Represent the chapter in communicating Association policies and programs to lay and professional groups.
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by the Executive Committee of the UniServ Unit, the Presidents and the Board of Directors of the two units.

Qualifications:

  • A BS/BA or higher degree
  • Preferred educational background including teaching experience in public schools.
  • Experience with and broad understanding of teacher organizational programs and services at the local, state and national levels.
  • Demonstrated Association leadership experience and ability to work with professional groups.
  • Demonstrated organizing, negotiating, and coordinating skills necessary to successfully manage and complete complex group projects and activities.
  • Ability to use computers and learn the necessary programs and applications to support chapter bargaining, organizing and communications.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing the public schools and teaching profession in California.
  • Ability to work in collaborative and traditional relationships with site and district administration.
  • Previous staff experience or service as a fulltime release president preferred.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary Range of $86,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year.
