The Suburban Houston Organizing Project is seeking a full-time Organizer for the suburban Houston area. This position is supervised by the Project Director. Organizers perform a number of duties, including recruiting new members, identifying potential leaders and activists, and tracking data in their assigned areas. This is a joint venture between the American Federation of Teachers and the Suburban Houston Organizing Project.

Applicants should have a working knowledge of unions and a strong commitment to the labor movement. Organizing experience is a requirement. Teachers and paraprofessionals with organizing experience are highly encouraged to apply.

This job requires often long and irregular hours, some weekend work, and may include some travel.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take direction from the Project Director and/or designee on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership in the assigned school districts
  • Make appointments for school visits, one-on-one visits, and other interaction with members and potential members in assigned school districts to make assessments
  • Attend daily and weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and make plans
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a daily/weekly basis
  • Prepare mailings and other literature for distribution to campuses & employees
  • Occasionally, assignment as a formula rep in other parts of the state or country as required for short periods of time

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong commitment to the labor movement
  • Able to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Some knowledge of public sector unions in non-collective bargaining situations is preferred
  • Computer literacy required, some database experience preferred
  • Detail oriented
  • Bilingual a plus
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license

COMPENSATION:
The Organizer position makes $42,032.16/year with employee healthcare available, pension contributions after one year of employment, cell phone and mileage reimbursement, and vacation and sick leave. Details available upon inquiry.
