AFSCME Local 4041 is currently seeking one committed organizer for our Carson City/Reno NV, location.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 4041, a state wide local for state employees, is currently seeking a committed Organizer for our Carson City office.

As an Organizer, you will be responsible for organizing workers in a right to work state.  Inform Lead Organizer, Area Organizing Director, and Local Executive Board of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings.  Conduct worker meetings, build organizing committees, assist with turn-out to meetings and events and strengthen our union. The right candidate must be able to do home visits, telephone turnout, member to member organizing and member recruitment and duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma and 1 to 3 years’ experience in union organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities; knowledge of union organizing practices and principles; basic knowledge of labor laws, and union organizing; knowledge of anti-union employer tactics.  Possesses leadership, motivational skills and exhibits good oral and written communication skills.  Work is performed in a variety of employment settings.  Valid automobile driver’s license and auto insurance, extended travel, variable work schedules and temporary assignments are necessary.  Probation will be one year to encompass training and successful work on organizing campaigns.

Salary and Benefits Package: 

  • Salary Range:  $30,000-$40,000 Commensurate with experience.

CLASS CONCEPTS
This position is responsible for successfully conducting and running organizing campaigns. Performs activities associated with campaigns, organizers, committees, making home visits, agency site visits, performs voter assessment, GOTV efforts and plans campaigns implementing the AFSCME Organizing Model and the AFSCME Local 4041 Strategic Organizing Plan. Implementation of the Local 4041 Strategic Organizing Plan within the AFSCME Organizing Model includes targeting, pre-petition campaigns, election campaigns, first amendment campaigns, house and worker site visits.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understands and is proficient in all elements of the AFSCME Organizing Model and the AFSCME Local 4041 Strategic Organizing Plan.
  • Conduct broad and intensive outreach efforts to members and potential members of AFSCME Local 4041, aligned with the strategic Organizing Plan.
  • Explores organizing targets to gather data and information, build a list of workers, assesses interest and explores the work place infrastructure without disclosing the union’s presence.
  • Visits job sites to communicate with members and potential members to discuss organizing efforts and the role of the union.
  • Conducts one on one organizing, recruit leaders and supporters, guide their activities on behalf of the union and identify attitudes of individual workers.
  • Develops broad representative organizing committees of worker-leaders, trains and supports them to move the campaign.
  • Communicate with members and potential members outside the workplace through house visits, phone calls and electronically.
  • Recruits volunteer organizers within AFSCME membership.
  • Engage workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to preserve and expand vital state services.
  • Organize and conduct group meetings
  • Build coalitions with other likeminded groups and organizations.
  • Coordinate with members and potential members to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization.
  • Include input on and operation of computerized database systems.
  • Return phone calls and e-mails promptly to members and potentials.
  • Design and create leaflets, fliers and other materials for organizing campaigns and general membership information.
  • Informs lead organizer and the Locals President of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity including worker meetings.
  • Prepares regular activity reports as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Directions and Decision Making: This Position reports to AFSCME Local 4041 Executive Board, and may also report to a Lead Organizer. Keeps Lead Organizer and AFSCME Local 4041 Executive Board regularly apprised of developments during organizing activities, tasks and day to day operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma and six months to three years’ experience in union organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities.

  • Knowledge of union organizing and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of labor law, especially with respect to union organizing.
  • Knowledge of anti-union employer tactics.
  • Leadership and motivational skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluent bilingual skills are desirable.

Physical Requirements (as required by ADA): 

Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required. Valid driver’s license and valid auto insurance required.
