State Federation Organizer


Kansas Association of Public Employees, dba AFT-Kansas, is the State Federation of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), representing over 15,000 public sector employees (teachers, healthcare workers, higher education, as well as city, county, and state employees).

This position reports directly to the State Federation President. Federation organizers will carry out the implementation of all AFT-Kansas organizing strategies as directed. Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Work cooperatively with AFT-Kansas leadership, professional staff and local leaders to recruit and develop new worksite, local and statewide leaders
  • Assist locals and local leaders in developing worksite leadership structures
  • Assist in developing power building plans for locals
  • Assist locals in turning worksite issues into organizing and growth opportunities
  • Work cooperatively with AFT-Kansas leadership, professional staff and local leaders to recruit new members
  • Schedule formal and informal meetings and visits with members and potential members
  • Provide State Federation President with accurate assessments of union strength and reports of activities and facility records as directed
  • Lead organizing campaigns to win Union recognition for unorganized workplaces; building organizing committees, identifying issues, leadership identification and capacity development within existing locals
  • Educate workers and others on how power relationships work and how workers can/should use that knowledge
  • Organize rallies and demonstrations, including organizing workers to support actions and pressure campaigns on employers and building community support
  • Develop and disseminate written materials including flyers and meeting notices
  • Educate and mobilize members around the Union’s political program
  • Lead workers in community issues and build relationships with relevant people, groups, and organizations outside the Union
  • Represent the Union as assigned in community and labor coalition activities
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and weekly debriefs
  • Complete all required administrative tasks (i.e., Activity forms, expense forms, etc.) in a timely and accurate manner
  • Required to work long and varying hours including weekends, nights and holidays. Regular worksite visits, home visits and canvassing are required.
  • Driving long distances for extended periods of time is also required. Travel both statewide and out of state with overnights and periods away from home may be required.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Experience as a Union Organizer or proven ability to carry on the responsibilities of the job, including phone banking and house calling
  • Knowledge of workers, the workplace, labor, and political issues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Adept at leading and motivating workers in necessary struggles
  • Experience with contract negotiations and contract campaigns
  • Skilled at managing and meeting many and varying deadlines
  • Effective demonstrable oral, written and listening skills in English; bilingual skills highly desirable
  • Excellent analytical and judgment skills as demonstrable by the ability to assess information and evidence and act strategically
  • Excellent organizational and prioritizing skills showing flexibility as needed; adept at dealing with conflicting/changing priorities
  • Effective facilitation and training skills
  • Ability to work and organize independently and as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of or ability and willingness to learn computer programs necessary to complete work requirements

The Union Representative/Organizer is required to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and a working automobile.

Physical Demands:
The capacity to lift up to 25 pounds is required.
