Kentucky Associate Director

Job Title: Kentucky Associate Director
Salary: $60,000 - $70,000; plus benefits

Purpose
Responsible for efficiently administering and coordinating the activities of Council 962, under the direction of the Executive Director, or designee. Must perform a variety of managerial functions within Council 962 and maintain professional relationships with diverse levels of union and employer representatives.

In addition to special projects and other assignments, the associate director serves as a central resource for all staff and assists the Executive Director or designee with accomplishing internal and external organizing goals and for carrying out the union’s vision for building strength and achieving growth.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Examples provided are a general summary of the work required.)

  • Assists the Executive Director or designee on various projects, including external and internal organizing campaigns, affiliation campaigns, and defending against decertifications.
  • Assists or leads in contract bargaining of major contracts that Council 962 has assumed responsibility for and first time contracts in newly organized locals.
  • Assists the Executive Director or designee in developing relationships with local unions that assist in strengthening and invigorating the union at all levels and ensuring that strategic plans are devised and goals and benchmarks are achieved.
  • May be responsible for directly supervising staff. May oversee Council 962 projects, as necessary.
  • Assists the Executive Director in overseeing any administratorships, ensuring that plans exist for the timely recovery of those locals.
  • Functions as a team member with the Executive and Assistant Director in administering the Union’s programs.
  • Is responsible for the maintenance of Council 962’s grievance and arbitration tracking system
  • Assists in development of Council 962’s public policy positions and political mobilization and lobbying efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Contacts
Include AFSCME Council 962 and International staff, local union officials and members, leaders and members of other unions, workers and public officials and others as directed by the Executive Director or designee.

Directions and Decision Making
This position reports to the Executive Director or designee. Work is performed independently and is reviewed on an as-needed basis.

Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in labor studies, labor relation or political action and 7 to 10 years of experience in union leadership acting in an official capacity to plan, administer and coordinate major union activities or a combination of education and experience to provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of labor unions and organizing.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor laws, both public and private sector.
  • Advanced ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
  • Advanced ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Advanced ability to analyze research data and to make logical conclusions.
  • Advanced oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff and fiscally manage large budgets.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computer and associated software.
  • Arbitration and mediation experience
  • Internal and external organizing experience
  • Experience negotiating contracts, agreements, memorandum of understandings
  • Planning and implementing issues campaigns
  • Planning and implementing contract campaigns

Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in an office environment as well as a variety of employment settings, such as employer workplaces, neighborhoods and wherever workers may be found. Must have a valid driver’s license and drive an automobile. Must be able to conduct visits in workers’ homes and travel to on-site locations. May require long-term assignments away from home base and work extended hours.
