The Position
Are you a design-savvy programmer who’s passionate about the positive potential of science to save the world? The Union of Concerned Scientists is looking for a creative, versatile web developer with strong Drupal skills to help support an organization bringing science-based solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions in state and federal government. We work on issues related to global warming, clean energy and transportation, nuclear weapons, and agriculture—and we advocate for the role of science and evidence in making decisions that affect us all.

Responsibilities
Serve as in-house web developer and project manager supporting a Drupal-based website and WordPress-based blog. Primarily responsible for combining excellent UX/UI principles with good visual sense and strong coding chops to help web team create and implement engaging web content for the general public. Keeps UCS website, blog, and microsites running smoothly. Create code for UCS emails, wrappers, and website forms that integrates with our CRM database.

Works closely with communications and program colleagues to ensure products are created collaboratively, as well as on message, on brand, and on time.

  • Provide daily technical assistance for website, blogs, and microsites
  • Collaborate with staff to develop and implement creative ideas for campaign-based interactive content that resonates with the general public
  • Project manage and implement creative, functional, and user-friendly web- and mobile-based features
  • Modify and create new Drupal modules
  • Code advocacy emails and action alerts when added functionality is needed
  • Work with web and online advocacy teams to identify, troubleshoot, and solve problems
  • Maintain graphic standards and branding throughout the product’s interface
  • Promote usability best practices
  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Optimize site for maximum speed and scalability
  • Provide robust and helpful documentation
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging technologies
  • Maintain understanding of UCS issues and positions.
  • Maintain awareness of role as representative of UCS; considers impact of activities on organization’s reputation and credentials in public and private sectors; directs energies whenever possible to promote UCS; advance organization’s objectives; and enhance credibility.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidate must have proven ability to create visually appealing, usable web features and integrate them into a Drupal-based site
  • Experience building responsive design websites using Drupal CMS, HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, and JavaScript/jQuery
  • Knowledge of PHP, PHP files and theme functions, and knowledge of the Drupal theme layer
  • Through understanding of software development best practices
  • Advanced site-building experience including deep familiarity with Drupal modules such as CTools, Views, and Panels
  • Experience creating custom Drupal modules
  • Must be able to explain technical considerations to non-technical staff
  • Advanced knowledge of WordPress configuration
  • Familiarity with debugging tools
  • Knowledge of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git
  • Communicate professionally, concisely and consistently both verbally and in writing internally and externally
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively to meet timelines with quality deliverables
  • Strong organization and problem solving skills required
  • BS in computer science or related discipline preferred
  • 3 – 5 years of proven Drupal development experience
  • Expertise in HTML, CSS (and CSS pre-compilers like SASS), JavaScript, and jQuery
  • Expertise in Drupal theming with strong understanding of PHP
  • Experience with responsive and adaptive design
  • Knowledge of advanced JavaScript libraries and frameworks, such as Angular, Knockout, Backbone, React, etc.
  • Possess outstanding attention to detail
  • Self-starter with an ability to think and work independently;

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Cambridge, MA office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary range is in the $70s per year depending on experience. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
