Chief of Staff

Purpose
The Chief of Staff will work as the key coordinator in an organization moving with ambitious speed on a multitude of fronts. As the link between the senior management team and the President and the Executive Vice Presidents, the COS will maintain awareness of progress towards goals on specific projects and overarching plans across the organization, and keep the President well informed on a day-to-day basis. S/he will also coordinate teams and suggest additional resources or cross-department collaboration as necessary.

Position Summary
The ideal candidate will be able to manage both the smallest details while maintaining a high-level view, must be an exceptional project manager, and be able to build trusted relationships across dotted line organizational charts. S/he will have impeccable discretion, and bring an unflappable approach and behavior as well as excellent teaching and training abilities in managing a newly formed team.

The Chief of Staff is responsible for managing and helping the President lead SEIU Local 2015, including:

  • Directly supporting the President’s leadership
  • Helping to shape and guiding the union’s strategy and program
  • Leading the union’s senior staff

Essential Job Functions

Supporting the President’s Leadership

  • Ensure a strong Executive Office that values the President’s time and priorities, and that the President receives appropriate preparation for meetings and events
  • Counsel the President on key decisions
  • Hold and manage key external relationships with public officials and partners for the President
  • Help the President delegate authority on priority campaigns and projects
  • Help manage the President’s relationship and communication with Officers, staff and local leaders
  • With the President and SFO, guide the union’s annual planning and budgeting process with officers and senior staff
  • Ensuring strong communication and decision-making among Officers

Shaping and Guiding Strategy and Program

  • Drive the President’s strategy to advance the priorities and plans of the union
  • Evaluate and recommend changes in strategy in partnership with the senior leadership team
  • Work with the President and Officers to develop shared strategies and change processes
  • Work with the President to guide strategy and program decisions with the Officers, Executive Board, and Senior Leadership
  • Ensure resource and staffing decisions match the priorities of the union
  • When necessary, directly oversee or adjust critical projects

Leading the Union’s Senior Staff

  • Build a successful team of Department Directors to develop and integrate programs to deliver on the union’s goals
  • Guide the hiring and transition for senior staff
  • Hold senior staff accountable to their responsibilities to drive the union’s strategies and programs
  • As entrusted by the President, assist senior managers in pursuit of department goals
  • Provide support and counsel to senior staff
  • Ensure senior staff communicate and collaborate
  • Work closely with the general counsel and senior staff to ensure compliance and risk management
  • Oversee the planning and execution of Local Union Executive Board meetings in partnership with key members of the senior staff

All other duties as assigned by the President

Qualifications

  • Significant, high-level management experience, including at least five years working in project management, preferably in a mission-driven organization/campaign.
  • A sense of urgency necessary to drive change within an advocacy organization paired with the patience to understand that not all demands are equal.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, often in a fast-paced environment.
  • The flexibility, energy, and attention to detail needed to manage a heavy workload and rapidly changing contexts and view projects at a macro level while tracking the most granular of details.
  • Proven ability to build deep and lasting relationships with a variety of internal partners, with whom no direct line supervision exists, as well as external individuals, from national leaders to grassroots volunteers.
  • Impeccable discretion above all else.
  • Gravitas paired with the professional integrity and ambition to effectively represent and promote SEIU Local 2015 externally at the highest levels and internally as a surrogate for the President and/or Officers.
  • An ability to quickly triage competing interests such that those which are most important are given the direct attention of the President. The knowledge to determine which problems and challenges can be resolved independently and the ability to make it so.
  • Strong financial management skills appropriate to the oversight of a broad range of projects and event contracts.
  • A team player with exceptional communication skills along with interpersonal savvy.
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus additional related college courses or professional training preferred.
  • A passion for the mission of SEIU Local 2015 and the role of the Labor Movement and worker organizations that translates to an unflinching commitment to exceptional work product
  • 10+ years of experience in union or community organizing and representation leading a team of at least four or more staff.
  • 10+ years more of supervisory experience
  • 10+ years of advocacy and/or organizing work
  • Proven ability to develop effective strategies and lead teams in variety of assignments
  • Proven ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Proven ability to provide effective leadership
  • Experience working as part of a team highly desirable.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in the field with members and outside constituents. Long and irregular hours required. Travel required.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Chief of Staff reports directly to the President.
