Worksite Organizer

Organization Summary:
Service Employees International Union, Local 221 (SEIU Local 221) is a progressive union representing over 13,000 San Diego and Imperial County area employees, including County, cities, schools, courts, Red Cross, and Head Start workers. With an active member organizing committee, we plan to organize thousands more workers to continue to be the leading political and community voice for working families in San Diego. This voice comes directly from our members. We believe that the values and issues of working men and women are integral to any form of social change.

Purpose:
The role of the Worksite Organizer is to organize and mobilize. Organizing is capacity building -- organizing members into new and existing networks, activities, small groups, affinity groups, geographic groups, etc. Mobilizing is delivering members for various campaigns.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Worksite Organizer performs a wide range of duties, which may vary according to the needs of the overall program or a specific campaign. Examples of those duties and responsibilities are listed below:

Engaging Members and Identifying and Developing Leaders

  1. Sustained Strategic Engagement and Development of Members
  2. Expand the base of the union by connecting members into a variety of activities
  3. Develop members to become capable of executing important union roles ensuring members the chance to grow, learn and lead.
  4. Create and design new member roles that are connected to union mission, and draw upon and develop the talents and networks of members so they become self sustaining roles.
  5. Educate member leaders and promote the Local’s vision and related programs (Organizing, Politics, and Community)
  6. Conduct Labor/Management meetings, Meet and Confers, Chapter meetings, etc in such a way as to optimize member participation and leadership development.
  7. Where appropriate, negotiate contacts and plan and execute contract campaigns with maximum member participation and leadership engagement.
  8. Where appropriate, recommend the filing of ULP(s) when doing so is designed to increase membership involvement or union strength in a worksite or at the bargaining table.
  9. All staff may be assigned other duties not included in this job description as required by the organization.

Utilizing the Resources of the Advocacy Center

  1. Develop worksite campaigns based on group issues identified by the Advocacy Center
  2. Incorporate and utilize resources of the Advocacy Center in local Political and Organizing activities. Keep center informed and briefed to help support members and activists within the campaign.
  3. Assess and Develop potential member leaders and activists identified through the Advocacy Center.

Mobilizing Membership Networks

  1. Mobilize, coordinate, and support membership networks for various campaigns (organizing, political, COPE).
  2. Strike or Contract Campaign Support

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
A Worksite Organizer must be able to organize his or her time, and develop and carry out plans with minimum supervision. S/he must also be able to receive direction from and interact with his or her immediate supervisor when it becomes necessary.

Criteria for Evaluation:
The Worksite Organizer will be evaluated on his/her ability and skill in assisting the Local to meet its goal of organizing and representing workers successfully. Among other criteria, s/he will be evaluated on the ability to:

  • Engage members
  • Identify and develop leaders
  • Demonstrate a curiosity in members lives and struggles
  • Map member relationships and interests and align them with the overall goals of the union
  • Move campaigns and take initiatives on promoting strategies
  • Maintain numeric goals for membership, COPE, etc. as established by the union.
  • Optimize use of resources of the local including the Advocacy Center and departments.
  • Maintain working relations with the members and other staff
  • Balance conflicting demands successfully
  • Work independently
  • Carry out assigned responsibilities in a competent and professional manner in keeping with the Local’s overall goals and expectations.

Working Conditions:
Worksite Organizers will be required to work long and irregular hours, and to work on weekends and holidays when necessary.

Other Expectations:
Worksite Organizers are expected to lead by example. It is the role of the Worksite Organizer to provide model behaviors of what is expected as a Leader in our Union. All staff is expected to respect the processes of the organization and is expected to work within the framework of the Local Union to resolve internal disputes and issues.

Key Qualifications:
Worksite Organizers will be expected to be proficient in the following skills and abilities within one year of hire or one year from the date of implementation of the new organizing model:

  1. Ability to lead, motivate and inspire members to develop into leaders and participate in key union programs (i.e. politics, organizing, bargaining, etc.)
  2. Demonstrated understanding of the organizing model and how it can be used to empower members and insure superior outcomes in workers’ lives.
  3. Ability to take initiative and be creative in developing new roles for members within the union and provide the support needed to be successful.
  4. Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality member experience including the ability to establish and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  5. Working knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining issues and human resource management principles.
  6. Ability to develop member leaders to deal with worksite issues.
  7. Sound organizational skills to manage and prioritize work subject to deadlines in a dynamic and changing environment, as an individual and as a member of a team.
  8. Demonstrated ability to formulate and deliver on short-term and long-term member development and capacity building goals.

Compensation:
