Associate Economic Analyst

Are you good with people and numbers?  The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 54,000 pilots at 31 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an Associate Economic Analyst for our Herndon, Virginia, office.  Under close supervision by the Manager and in collaboration with other Economic Analysts, the Associate Economic Analyst provides statistical, economic, financial, and agreement analysis in support of contract negotiations; prepares legal exhibits; provides analytical support and other reports for Association executives; and, assists Economic Analysts and department management in long-term research and development of Association policy proposals.

An ALPA Associate Economic Analyst must possess solid analytical skills and be sufficiently proficient in Excel to develop the increasingly complex models that are critical in collective bargaining.  S/he should possess a good understanding of financial statements and economics and some knowledge of information resources that would be useful in promoting the objectives of the Association.  S/he should also be creative as s/he determines what and which data would be useful in resolving an issue as accurately and in as timely a manner as possible; then, s/he must compile and analyze the information to determine its effectiveness.

As the Associate Economic Analyst may represent the Association at industry economic, financial, and transportation research conferences, s/he should be equally comfortable interacting with people and making presentations as working with spreadsheets and computers.

Local and national (some international) travel:  10 – 20%.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Economics, Finance, or other related discipline, from an accredited college or university required; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in economic and/or financial analysis required, five (5) or more years strongly preferred.  Advanced degree and/or ALPA experience, at management discretion, may be substituted for required years of experience.
  • Solid quantitative skills required.
  • Technical writing and public speaking skills required.
  • Ability to customize computer models using Excel strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of air transportation economics preferred.  Airline experience and knowledge of pilot labor agreements preferred.
  • Academic or job-related experience performing economic/financial analyses of airlines or other similar industries preferred.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Self-starter able to work independently on multiple projects, with varying degrees of complexity, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team environment is essential. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, pilots, and external contacts.
  • Software:  Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Word, and Outlook.

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and travel locally and nationally; international travel may be required infrequently.  Also includes occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack, unpack, and/or move cases.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.).  While on travel, may be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, boxes, cases, and/or files weighing as much as 50 lbs.  (Assistance may not always be available.)
