Communications Coordinator

Colorado WINS is seeking a dynamic and collaborative leader to join the union's communications team. The ideal candidate will have the ability to develop and lead comprehensive communications campaigns; to make connections with Colorado press outfits; experience as a communications and marketing generalist; and a strong commitment to social justice.

Purpose of Position
The Colorado WINS Communications Coordinator is responsible for planning and executing communications and publicity campaigns to support organizing, political action, and other activities of the union to build power for state employees and amplify their voices. The communications coordinator will collaborate with leadership on developing and coordinating communications strategy, media relations, digital marketing, social media, and messaging for campaign and other union projects.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Designing and executing earned, paid, and social media tactics and strategies to reach, identify and mobilize thousands of Colorado State Employees
  • Proactively find opportunities to amplify the voices of CO state employees
  • Build relationships with other communicators, reporters, and communications vendors

Primary job duties

  • Ensures all duties of Communications Specialist are completed.
  • Exercise supervisory responsibilities over other COWINS communications staff and manage communications vendor relationships. Makes communications-related assignments for all COWINS staff.
  • Use digital and traditional communications tactics to support the field efforts of CO state employees to build their union; enhance the union’s identity and build its reputation among employees, legislators, and the public at large
  • Proactively secure earned media coverage and be the primary media contact for COWINS
  • Build relationships to promote and amplify COWINS members’ work on social as well as traditional media
  • Assist CO state employees with drafting and placing Letters to the Editor, op-eds, and blog post
  • Create talking points, fact sheets and other materials for use with reporters
  • Prepare COWINS members to be spokespeople
  • Oversee production of the email communications, including regular union-wide newsletters, facility or department newsletters, etc.
  • Oversee production of print collateral, text and email communications, branded gear, and content for social media
  • Collaborate with the campaign director and staff members to create reports, correspondence, and other written material
  • Track analytics to measure impact

Rarely, overnight statewide travel is required. Occasional work requirements also include participation in activities in the field and work with union-supported political issues/campaigns.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice with a track record of success working on communications for campaigns centered in communities of color or that involve women or low-income people.
  • 5+ years experience in communications and/or marketing.
  • Experience creating and implementing digital tactics.
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly collaborative work style and thrive on managing a variety of key initiatives at the same time
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence"
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force
  • Self-starter, able to work independently
  • Experience with coaching, mentoring, or supervising staff or volunteers

SALARY & BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $69,665-$107,330. Starting salary can increase based on experience. Full benefits package including health insurance, a pension plan, and paid vacation. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
